The Great Guitar Build-off
Mark Noel
I am an amateur woodworker and mostly build things for either myself or friends and family. I've never built a guitar before but thought it'd be fun to give it a shot and probably learn some stuff along the way. I will be building along with my friend Andy, who is also building a guitar for the competition.
For my build, I'll be making an SG type guitar with a Mahogany and Sapele body, a Sapele neck, and Walnut fretboard. The body is a bit untraditional in the sense that its made from standard 4/4 boards glued together pancake style with the ribbon Sapele on top. I will have a classic tremolo style bridge with locking tuners, and push/pull volume pots for splitting the Humbuckers, a 3 way toggle and one tone pot.
I'm going for a clean looks with nothing crazy fancy or complex, I want the ribbon Sapele to be the main design feature. I will be including comfort carves in the body and likely a bit on inlay. The hardware will all be black as to not take away from the wood.
